Re: What do i need to fix this.......
This is the air pump and the EGR valve (possibly the combi-valve)
they are notorious for failing on Audi/VW cars.
I've done research and found that they will keep failing!
the dealer will replace the unit for a charge but if it fails again, it will be covered by a 12 month warranty.
A fellow VW owner had this problem 4 times within 3 years.... the dealer replaced the part 3 times but refused to do it again. His headaches with this issue has caused him never to consider buying an Audi/VW car in the future. TOO BAD
the reason why it fails is because the emmission control system takes ehxaust gasses from the ehxaust manifold and injects them back to the intake. however....exhaust gasses contain water vapour..especially in rainy weather. so the water gets into the air pump and destroys the pump over time. the leak happens because the pump or the combi valve get stuck in the open position..thus not allowing the system to control emissions on its own. the parts for the emmission control system are made by Pierburgh...a company which is contracted by Audi/VW to make those parts.
Pierburgh is a quality manufacturer. but Audi/VW has asked for a cheaper part(air pump and combi-valve)to reduce cost...hence the reduced longevity of the emmissions control system in older Audi/VW cars.
Not quite sure if this problem has been corrected in the newer vehicles...only time will tell.
To be honest....I have this problem as well and I refuse pay for a faulty part on a yearly basis because a) the manufacturer failed to deliver on the promise of a quality part and b) because the manufacturer will not correct it and will not honour the warranty.
I'm thinking about a BMW or Volvo in the future.
Audis/VWs are great cars but is the headache worth it?
