You can try eBay, but it's a hit and miss: I tried one and it wouldn't work, as in the dealer couldn't program it to talk to the immobilizer.

So what would work better an aftermarket one?....i really like the weather resistance housing on the stock remote.

Its not a hit and miss if you buy the matching code ones. Each key is different and they all have serial numbers if you will that correspond to your car. These serial numbers/ letters need to be matched up with the ebay key and then it will work

Partially correct.

B5's (1996-2001) DO NOT have immobilizers so you DO NOT need to program your key. All you need to do is buy a two-button remote (no trunk release) and get a blank "HAA" switchblade key. Then you need to get the key cut, which is probably the most difficult thing. Call around to locksmiths and ask if they have a "Sidewinder" machine with proper clamps for VW/Audi keys. Our keys tend to tilt in standard clamps.

As for immobilizers, if you have your original 4-digit or 7-digit immobilizer code, you can program your transponder chip with a VAG-COM. If you lost that card with the scratch box, you will need to get it programmed at a dealer. They no longer program transponders with codes, the VAS (dealer scan tool) connects directly to a server and programs your key directly.

I got mine a couple years back off fleabay. It was originally supposed to go in my Corrado but the G-Lader crapped out on it and I haven't had time to fix it so I put it on my Audi.

From what I hear, you should stay away from the SS ( Spectrum) models since they drain the battery life on the remotes like crazy. I have a 900FM or 8000FM (in Canada). I think 3000ft is more than enough range. When are you ever gonna be more than half a mile away from your car. Plus the newer remotes have cheesy cases. The older ones have leather cases (case bought separately).

Also, get the one with the grey remote, not blue. The grey remote has turbo timer function where as the blue only has second vehicle.

the12volt (dot) com has vehicle wiring diagrams/locations.
