Recomended service? 01 A4 1.8T
Hello, I just bought my first Audi A4 1.8T a week ago and am new to the forum.
I'm currently in the process of getting the beast on the road. Wondering if anybody could give me some tips on things to check/fix while I'm doing work to it. I am a mechanic but my experience is with driveline (transmission, clutch, transfer case, & differentials) so the engine work is new to me.
I have to do the timing belt because the water pump is leaking (kit came with the car). Replace a broken rear spring (tips on how to take the spring off the shock would be awsome). I've read that the cylinder heads commonly get sludged up, any tips on removing engine sludge thats turbo safe? What type of engine oil is best? Is AMS OIL ok?
I also plan on doing a tune up and am interested in E3 spark plugs. Anybody have any experiences with these? Do they improve fuel milage, performance, etc.? I was told when I bought the car that it is chipped, and exhaust tuned. Would E3's improve my tuning? What is the stock exhaust pipe size (my car has 2.5" pipes from the cat back didnt know if this was stock, looks nice though).
Any responses are appreciated.
Many thanks,
Mike

Do you happen to know what type of oil was used by the previous owner? Depending on oil change interval, if full synthetic was used in the past, you most likely don't have to worry about sludge. Sludge usually builds up on the pickup tube and starves your top end which causes the notorious engine failure but this was was due to conventional oil use.
I use Mobil 1 0W-40 European Blend purchased at Canadian Tire when it's on 25% off every 5000km. I've heard others of using Amsoil. Stealership uses Castrol Full Synthetic 5W-40.
As far as spark plugs go, alot of B5 owners with a chipped car, including myself, go with the NGK BKR7E copper tip gapped at 0.028". At $2.00 a piece, you can afford to change them out every other oil change (10000km). From reading on the forums, the majority use this spark plug, but some still like the Platinum tip for longevity. Haven't heard much on the E3.
Other than the regular fluid changes, just fix things as they wear out. Other than the T-belt/ water pump and the oil used over the past 10 years, there's really not much more to look at. If everything looks and sounds good, then you should be good to go.
