Parts I should look out for.

Re: Parts I should look out for.
Other things to look for: Wheel Bearings replaced yet? ( mine ALL failed before 100K ). ALL vacuum lines will surely be rotten and leaking by now, look at'em closely around the nipples. Waste gate actuation, EGR plugged up yet?, Dip stick tube still there? In one piece? Open the oil cap and look at it... take a whif in the valve cover... does it look or smell like it's cooked? Or like gas? Has the car been running a "large" oil filter and synthetic oil?
BTW, the instrument cluster center "information display" is most likely dead or dying... VERY normal : (
Also, timming belt re&re is by far the easiest I've ever done on any car. Dieselgeek has awsome deals on complete kits if you decide you're up to the task...

Re: Parts I should look out for.
Can I change it (the timing belt, tensioner...the kit) myself or do I need to leave this to professionals?
How difficult is it to do? Has anyone changed their own timing belt?
Isn't the timing belt at the back of the engine block? between the firewall and the engine?
I like to work on my car as much as I can...although I do realize that some of the mods/maintenance issues need to be left for the professional mechanics to do.

Re: Parts I should look out for.
I just did all the maintenance on my 99.5 A4... (I am a mechanic though). Replaced the serp belt, timing belt, WP belt, P/S belt, serp belt tensioner, timing belt tensioner, cam seal, crank seal, intermediate shaft seal, valve cover gasket, water pump, and spark plugs. It's quite a bit of work but then you know you're set for the next 5 years and don't have to worry about those parts letting you down. I used to work at a VW dealer and it's wierd that the same engine as Audi requires timing belt service at 130,000km versus 180,000km. Anyhow the more often you service your car the less problems you will have and it won't let you down. I would take a look at it for you but I broke my hip a few weeks ago and am not going to be working for a while.
