Default New owner of a 98 a4 1.8t looking for tips from experience

Hey Audiforums !
Just recently purchased an Audi so I finally made an account after lurking for a few months.
I'm looking for experienced Audi owners to give me some tips for a new guy.

What are some must have tools/parts/kits/accessories/ etc that I should look into buying ?

My car is a 98 Audi a4 1.8t with 145km on the car with automatic tranny
Some recent parts changed :
New timing belt and water pump done at 112 kms*
New brakes pads rotors done at 139 kms*
New rear sway bar* 139 kms
Aftermarket blow off valve*
Aftermarket cold air intake*
New Exhaust done at 120 kms*
New ascending unit *
Sound system! 12" ken wood sub with sony deck and Legacy amplifier*
Turbo gauge*

I have read that a vag com is very crucial but was wondering if there was anything else ?
What are some good Audi parts stores in Ontario ? What about good mechanics ?
What is the recommended tranny fluid to be used ?
What is the recommended oil with specs to be used ? For summer and winter?

Sorry for all the questions ! I do appreciate your time and help !

Hey phil21,

Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the world of Audi ownership!

Audi owner and mechanic here so let's see if we can answer some of your questions!

VAGCOM is a very handy diagnostic tool to have...much more detailed and extensive compared to your everyday OBD reader. If you are planning to undertake any sort of DIY repairs, VAGCOM will make your life a lot easier

With respect to parts and mechanics, maybe other members can chime in? However, we do specialize in the VAG group and are located in Toronto.

The new superseded part number for transmission fluid for your car is G052162A2. Febi makes a great alternative to the dealer fluid. If you are planning to do a trans service, make sure you do have access to VAGCOM and replace the trans filter/pan gasket.

With your car in particular, it is important to stay on top of oil changes...try and do them at a 6500KM interval maximum. Those motors are infamous for sludge issues. A high quality 5w-40 synthetic with OEM filter will be fine for both summer and winter...an example of oil that we use is Motul Xcess 5w-40 C3.

During the winter and because you do have a turbo, ensure you thoroughly warm up the car before taking off...its good practice and helps prevent damage to seals and gaskets. Finally, what sort of aftermarket blow-off valve is on your car? Audi's use a closed-loop system...aftermarket blow-offs can be used but you may experience some power loss

Any other questions, don't hesitate to give us a shout!
