Mechanical Nightmare?

Mechanical Nightmare?
As you can assume from my topic headline that this is going to be a thread about mechanical issues that are common with an a4. I have been planning to purchase an A4 (model year 98 - 2000, 2.8T Q, Automatic) for a while now and I absolutely love the car but as a student with minimal spare cash I don't think I will be able to keep up with the regular garage visits due to minor breakdowns/electrical problems etc as claimed by majority of the a4 owners. I have been doing a lot of research lately and came to the conclusion that almost every owner loves the car for its quattro system and unique driving experience (which is also my primary reason as well) but in the long run (often even shorter!) they are all facing some sort of mechanical problems (mostly electrical). Don't get me wrong I don't expect the car to be flawless as it ages, but how common are these problems? As we all know the parts and service are quite expensive for audis. So my question is how much can you (as an owner) relate to these experiences?
Keep in mind I am not looking to mod my car, nor do I have any intention to drive it like a maniac; I just want the comfort of having the awd system in the winter (I will be commuting a lot by highway) as well as the entry level luxury of the vehicle.

don't drive like a maniac, but at the same time don't granny style the car either. Gotta get those fluids pumping. Just make sure your engine is warmed up before you give it some thump. Not that you drive like a grand ma ma. Just sayin
