Horrible mileage - is this normal?

Horrible mileage - is this normal?
I've noticed over the last 6 months of ownership that my fuel mileage sucks, especially considering it's a 4-cylinder engine. I'm not the type to drive the wheels off a car, either. My mileage is anywhere from 25-28mpg (or 11.3 to 10.0 l/100km is you prefer) in 80% rural driving. Is this normal for the 1.8T engine?
One other thing I've noticed is that there is a lot of driveline drag on the car. Letting off the gas is almost like throwing out an anchor. And no, before you ask, the brakes are not sticking. Again, is this normal? I get the feeling that the two things go hand in hand.
BTW - 2000 1.8T quattro tiptronic, 210K km.

Re: Horrible mileage - is this normal?
Wow, I'd be happy with that kind of mileage.
I've just recently bought an 03 1.8T and only into my 2nd tank, but I've only been getting 15 mpg in mostly city driving! That's worse than my 4.0L Ranger pickup and at least 10mpg below what I was getting on my 04 BMW 325ix before I sold it.
Think there must be something wrong, so will have the dealer check it tomorrow when I bring it in for the coil pack recall.
If that's all we can expect from a 1.8L turbo I'll be looking for a 6 cylinder model sooner than later.

Re: Horrible mileage - is this normal?
I guess the mileage wouldn't bother me as much if A) my '08 CTS didn't beat it in mileage doing the same duty with twice the engine and B) it didn't take premium gas to do it.

Re: Horrible mileage - is this normal?
AWD burns more gas than a RWD or FWD car, also the little A4 is a bit of a heavy porker. I envy your gas Mileage, it's much better than what I'm getting. I only get 350KM's out of a full tank of gas with a 50/50 combination of hwy/city driving.

Re: Horrible mileage - is this normal?
I've only once done a 100% highway tank on a road trip and with cruise control at 130km/h I got 7.0L/100km.
Day to day for me is 80% city driving and get anywhere from 9.0L/100km in the summer to 11.0L/100km in dead of winter. I calculate my economy manually since the trip computer is about 10% too optimistic in my experience.
I think there was a pretty extensive gas mileage thread a while ago, might be able to search for it.
Maybe check things like tire pressure and O2 sensors?

Re: Horrible mileage - is this normal?
Just refueled tonight, and the last tank yielded a whopping 17.5mpg (16.22L/100K)
The dealer wanted to sell me a $150 injector service, but need to do some more research first. He offered to read the codes & see if it might be an o2 sensor (for a $120 charge, of course), but then agreed that if it was indeed a faulty sensor, it would show up as a warning fault on the trip computer.
Will have to watch this to see if it improves. If it doesn't I'll be one disappointed Audi owner - why would one drive an anemic 4 cyl for such poor gas mileage? Would have never dreamed that my old school 4.0L Ford Ranger would get the same mileage as a 1.8L 4.

PS - I am getting approx 500km / tank mixed highway and city, about 650 highway and about 450 city.
