Unhappy Girl desperatly seeking advice!! Misses her audi terribly!

If anyone has any advice or suggestions it would be greatly appreciated, let's just say i'm in quite the sticky situation.
I'm gonna try to make this as short as possible, but to get a complete understanding of what has happened to me, it might take a couple minutes to read, but if you bear with me, you'll get the just of it.
OK so, let's go back to January, when I turned 22, and decided to buy myself an A4. Total dream car for me! Opting to buy private, I found a 99 a4 1.8t quattro, for a pretty reasonable price, bought it e tested and certified. It's automatic, with tiptronic option. Drove it for the winter with no major problems. After driving it for a couple months, I began noticing it was not shifting into gear properly, and when I would excelerate, for example getting on the highway, it would kinda chug, and the rpms would fluxuate between 2 and 3 thousand and then finally smooth out. It would almost hesitate to go fast at first, but once you were up to speed it would drive smoothly. I guess you could say for the next little bit, I babied it, not excelerating fast, and i didn't drive it in tiptronic often. So about two months go by, nothing really changed, I'm just finishing up work, I go to start my car, and as soon as I turn it over, it sounds like theres a vacuum cleaner under the hood of my car. I get home and my dad tells me to take it into the shop asap. I got two blocks away, when someone behind me is waving at me to pull over, I pull to the side of the road and two minutes later a massive puddle of black oil is under my car and streaming onto the road. Got it to my shop, couple days later they call me and say I need to take out my tranny, and it needs to be rebuilt. Also, that a rear oil seal broke, likely where the oil spill came from. So basicly, I obviously didn't pay for this car with money out of my pocket, I was quoted wayy more then I payed for the car to fix this problem, and I'm not sure if this is exactly whats wrong with it, or if I'm just an easy target for my mechanic to make big dollars. If anyone has any info or advice for me, it would be appreciated sooo much. I only had this car for a couple months, and I was so stoked to have it for the summer, and I work two jobs so it's been beyond shitty trying to get around and do my thing. Is there any way for me to check the fluid in my tranny or anything? or has anyone heard of this happening? The car seems to be in fabulous condition, and I'm totally not prepared to sell it for parts or anything, really I would just love my car back.
Please and thank you to anyyyone who could give me a shout back.
Thanks dudes

Wow that really sucks how many km are on the car? and do you have the 2.8 or 1.8t ive seen rear main seals leak but its pretty rare for it to just blow out and start pissing oil everywhere when you saw the puddle of oil did you continue to drive it to the shop? and did a low engine oil warning pop up? it would help if you knew if the oil on the ground was engine oil or just really burnt transmission fluid the whining noise could be the torque converter going bad. Do you have a quote from the shop of what they want to replace if so post it the more info the better

there's just over 200 thou on the car,it's a 1.8t.
i got it towed after the oil pissed out, ya my engine oil temp gauge was at the red line, and also my coolant temp gauge they were both at the red line, like all the way to the left, should have mentioned that in my first post. haha
but no low engine oil warning came up nothing came up in my driver info system, and no lights came on. just my temp gauges.
ya they told me to get the the oil seal, they have to take out the engine and tranny, and then they said the tranny needs to be pulled out and rebuilt.
don't really know what to do, because they quoted anywhere from 3800-5200.
lets just say i basicly paid that for the car, so putting that much into it i really don't know if its even worth it, or if thats really needed to be done.

as for a tranny, go find one at a wrecker for that car. Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market

that should start to sav you some money. If Oil was spuing all over the place, something let loose and having all your oil drained is not a good thing.

My guess as to your original problem is the fluid was low in the tranny or your torque converter was giving out. if not both. From what you have said, sounds like the tranny is a gonner....

thanks so much for that link, found something close by for a good price and low kms. that helps a lot.
as far as buying a used tranny and going to a shop to get it dropped in, am i looking at being raped for service? i know it obviously going to depend where i go, but is it a hard process?

i would suggest getting a few quotes from the local shops. I grew up in oakville, one of the best shops for euro cars is mantis racing, but you are definitly going to pay more there...once you get the quotes i would be glad to help you go through them to figure out which one is best for you.

Red face Re: Girl desperatly seeking advice!! Misses her audi terribly!

Part it and buy an 01 A4...

Pay $5000 to fix it

OR.....

part it for ~$4000

spend another $1500 and get a new car

parting it out is a b*tch.

yea from what i read, i also think its your tranny... easy way is what sonic said, go to a junkyard or some online sites that sell old parts...

as for the oil spillage, to take the rear main seal out its gonna take a lot of labour to do it(charging cost)..

it sucks though to have such a nice car with expensive maintenance/repairs. Did you get a carfax before you bought the car? its just safer that way knowing if the previous owner really took care of the car. Also to spot check everything like simple symptoms like rotors, air filter, leaks..

also when was the last time you did a timing belt on your car? i mean when u find the right quote for the job, you might as well do everything else just to be sure this doesn't happen again. And make sure you might have to change the transfer case fluid, or differential case fluid as well for our tiptronics.

And back to the question to check the fluid in the tranny... its not possible because our cars require the use of a machine to plug in to the bellypan to suck out the old fluid and another hole to put in the transmission.
