Engine Oil Light

Engine Oil Light
Hey Guys,
Today while I was driving, the Engine Oil Light came on for a few seconds beeped and went away. And did not come back again. Then later it came back again and went away.
I did do an oil change at 123K, and now I am at 131K.
Does this mean I have to top-up the engine oil or do a complete oil change. If so do I just pick up the correct grade and top up.
Here is the newbie question, how do I know the correct level the oil should be and how can I do a proper top-up, all the how to's do not give a proper instruction on how I can do the oil top-up.
Forgive the trivial nature of this question, I would greatly appreciate the correct direction to handle this.
Thanks

Re: Engine Oil Light
pull out the oil dip stick wipe it clean and put it back in fully then pull it out, there wil be a indicator on the bottom that shows max and min. If level is too low then top it up, there should be a twist off cap looking thing on the top of engine just pour some there depending on the oil you use. and check again. make sure it does NOT exceed max. It can happen if you were on a steep incline or decline, the sensor gets fooled by the exact level and go off. check that though.
By the way you are already at 8k do oil now!!!!! dont pass about 7k mark. also oikl needs changing every 3 months, if you didnt hit the 7 k mark in that time
so 7k or 3 months, whichever comes first, doing it 5-6 k wont hurt either :P

Based on what I have read on this forum, I was under the impression that when using sythetic, you can for 10 - 12 K without any oil change.
But since the engine oil light is keeps coming, rather than a top-up I might as well do a complete oil change.
Just out of curiosity, how can I keep an eye on the maximum limit of oil during a top up? Is it the Max mark on the Reservoir immediately to the right of the engine ?

Re: Engine Oil Light
Well just use the ip stick directly to the right. Our engines take 4 liters of oil so if its at max then its at 4 liters if its at min then its closer to 2 or so, not sure about the math, just pour some in the engine, wait for a few minutes until it pours down to the pan and check again.
1.8t are nutorious for engine sludge which will hurt your engine in the long run and alot of repair bills. So doing it ever 5-6 k is a must. On the v6 model doing oil every 7-8 is still fine but 5k should be a limit. The advertised 10-12 and so is the maximum threshold. so i wouldn't push it, especially with the aged car. oil life is also said to be about 3 months in the engine, most people hit 3 months way before the 10-12 k mark, usually abut 5-6 so it works out well.
I used to use regular oil and change it every 3k but that just got to be a lot of hassle and time and i get a good deal at krown lakeshore on royal purple so i go with that now highly recommend that oil, I personally think its the best, so do alot of other people. Check out the royal purple site ;D
And i recommend doing seafoam treatment every 2-3 oil changes, there is a guide in D.I.Y section, its very easy in all honesty. I posted a youtube video on where to pour what, its very very hard to mess up doing it

Re: Engine Oil Light
When checking the oil level remember to do so when the car is warm, turned off and on level ground.
Follow GeneKam's instructions and you will be fine. I believe the correct grade would be 5W-40 or 0W-40. You can purchase Mobil 1 0W-40 at Cdn Tire for approx. $10 per litre.

Re: Engine Oil Light
Yes and you can get royal purple for like 850 per liter and its amazing oil. american top teams and engine masters challenge use it well 4 out of 5 teams. They did a test and well on a 400 hp car it added 7 hp with just regular 5w30.

Re: Engine Oil Light
I will be doing an oil change this weekend. Ordered the Lubro-Moly 5W-40 oil and Mann filter from JHM. Other than the extra shipping and customs charges it was the cheaper way to go. I justified it by ordering other parts that I wanted.

Re: Engine Oil Light
OP, if that was your oil pressure light coming on, you need to stop driving your car immediately and tow it to someone who knows what they're doing. Your particular 1.8T is susceptible to sludge and will kill your engine if there's enough of it.
If it was your oil level light, top up your oil; but, you really shouldn't be using such long oil-change intervals on your engine.
