drivetrain.......dead.....sos
k need some ideas here,,,
was doing about 110 on a flat stretch, threw it into 5th, then about 5 seconds later
im pressing the gas, and nothing just revving,no grinding or weird noises, first thing i thought was clutch, so i was close to a highway so i coasted as close as i could to it, and while waiting for the tow truck, im going through the gears hoping for some clues. noticed the speedo is still going up when i put it in gear and give it gas, so im thinking of ruling out the clutch and tranny, cause i can hear the clutch engaging and if the speedos going (in every gear) then its not the tranny. and theres no movement at all when i do this. i dont know much about the drivetrain on this car after the tranny.
could it be transfer case , if any??
its a 98 a4 2.8 awd

all depense where it broke.
it is a comon problem. i had a few cars were this happend.
if you are able to get the car to Keele and Eglington, i can find out exactly.
used driveshafts isn't a problem either, if you are on a tight budget.

the only reason i woul not think it is a drive shaft is that being awd drive, if you lose your rear drive shaft, your still going to move on FWD power. To lose both the front half shafts is nearly imposible. take traction control off and try to drive. If you do move on FWD power then yes it is a rear DS. if you dont move...then its in the tranny and more then likely the clutch was so worn down it jsut gave way...if it was that thin you may not even hear anything. Let me know what happens. Interesting problem.

i dont have traction control in the car, but i dont think it s the clutch, when i put it in gear its reading im doing 20 km or so when i release the clutch, so if the tranny speed sensor is picking up that then the tranny must still be good?? but i could be wrong it was gettin near the end........how is it to put in a clutch in these things.....???
i just dont know what consists of the transfer system after the transmission...
as for getting it to t.o. , im 4 hours north of there, which sucks, otherwise i would no problem...

That's not the case. You loose one driveshaft and you are going nowhere.

is any of this visible from the undercarraige? or is this a transmission romoval deal?
or is this have to do with that torsen diff?
where should i start looking.....
i wish i could find a decent schematic of how this all intertwines,,,

Simply hoist the vehicle and inspect all shafts... should be pretty obvious.
IcemanGER is correct in that if a shaft fails then car does not move.
BTW not a wise idea to re-use trans to rear driveshaft bolts on higher HP cars... they break.
Purchase Bentley Manual or equivalent to learn more about your Audi.

hummm...thas all new to me. The old jeep i had, i broke the DS to the rear dif and the and jeep kept moving by FWD power.
Now why does the audi not do that? i assumed it was traction control putting power to the wheels with least amoun of force back....which would make sence but take off traction control and all wheels should move should they not?
