Doin the Neebie thing..
Yea so as you can tell this is my first post, and i am still very new to the owning an Audi thing...aka im a dumb new kid or whatever the hell you guys call them here...so if you wanna read on and help a new guy out, it would be much appreciated....if not then go be smart somewhere else and leave a guy hangin...
So I have a 1998 A4 1.8T Quattro that has a blown turbo, so i obviously have to replace that...but figured since i will be shelling the money out for a new turbo...why not get an upgraded one and look into other upgrades.
Herein lies the question:
I have yet to drive the car, since i bought it cheap wit the turbo blown, with plans to fix and upgrade, so even though i haven't driven it, i am already thinking i want a bit more power then the 150bhp.
What would be a good upgrade from a stock KO3, to get some good gains in power?
What other upgrades from stock will i need/should i get?
The exhaust will probably need to be changed soon too, so what would be a good upgrade in exhaust to help with the power boost? HKS, Borla, something else?
Can anyone help a young dumb new guy out?

I'll try my best to give you a decent answer but you can find all the answers at audizine (dot) com in the forums. It is the best place to ask about performance. Word of caution; use the search function if you don't want to get chewed out.
Definitely do not get a K03. You can get a K04 for nearly the same price and it is direct bolt on. With a tuned ECU, injectors, and exhaust some guys are putting down some decent power.
You can go into the 300hp range with a GTRS Eliminator Kit but you will need to get a new exhaust manifold as well. You would also require an upgraded SMIC or have a FMIC installed. Internals will also need to be upgraded.
BAT (Big *** Turbo) status comes with a 3071. 400hp at the wheels, AWD.
You will definitely need to get a new diverter valve. Intake helps. Exhaust will give you big gains. Exhausts are pretty much all the same. Just pipe diameter and mandrel bent tubing are the difference in prices. The different manufacturers just have different exhaust notes. Which one you choose is your preference.
If you decide to get a new turbo that is not a K03, you will need to upgrade your ECU and diverter valve at bare minimum.

Re: Doin the Neebie thing..
With respect to a GTRS (been there, done that), internals are not required and a new mani is optional. A test pipe or relocated high flow cat will be required as the high EGT's will fry the OEM cat. Also, anything more than a K04 will require an upgraded clutch.

If you just bought that '98 Audi, I'd look into whether it needs a new clutch anyway. Should be about that time, depending on useage. Actually, with that car, it's about time that most of the things on there will be needing replacing soon.

Here's my question,
How do you know that nothing else is wrong with the vehicle if you have never driven it? Rule of thumb, never buy a car without first test driving it.
I won't even buy a car unless it comes with a current e-test. With the exception of project cars.

Re: Doin the Neebie thing..
The blown turbo on its own should not cause the car to be undriveable - it will run as a normally aspirated 1.8. Also it should pass emissions just fine, since the turbo doesn't influence that in anything but a negative manner (by increasing fuel consumption under load). My understanding is e-testing is done at low RPMs and in neutral/park, when the turbo's not generating real compression anyway.
