Do I really want an Audi????
HI Guys,
I've been looking at getting an Audi for the last couple of weeks. I've had a ton of cars (I'm 26). Just to name a few:
73' Super Beetle
93' Chev S-10
86 Merc Cougar
and I currently own a 94 Tempo and a 76 Nova SS (Summer Car of course, here in Ontario)
I make decent money, but I'm not Rich. Still paying off some decent bills. The reasons I want an Audi are:
Quattro
Power compared to my Tempo
Willing to go slightly more luxury then the Tempo. I've done all the reading, and carpinions, epinions and this site all pretty much say the same:
If your willing to buy a better car, you have to pay more for maintenance. THis makes sense to me, and putting premium in my Nova I'm willing to live with the hi-octane and synthetic oil.
So here's the questions
A) I'm looking at 98-99 Audi A4 used.
Is the 2.8 more reliable than the 1.8? I'm not looking to upgrade power, or any of that crap, I'm not a racer, I just want to drive a reasonably powered, nice looking car with AWD.
B) Does anyone live in the NIagara Region of Ontario know any decent independent or REALLY good Audi dealer mechanics?
C) Would it even be possible to get a warranty from Audi for a car this old, or would I be looking at 3rd party warranties only?
D) Do Audi dealerships generally have cars this old?
E) Does a price range around 5-6k for 170-200k km sound about right for decent shape?
F) I'm not a mechanic by any means, I'm a computer nerd. I don't mind turning a wrench, and my Old man has a full shop with hoist, and most tools you could think of, and enjoys working on cars.... but nothing too eletrical.. would it be safe to say he/we could change rotors and stuff like that or is it just insane once you get those wheels off?
G) Is a 2.8 5pd REALLY hard to come by?
I'm worried I'll bite off more than I can chew by buying one of these, but at the same time It's hard to find a comparable AWD vehicle with a decent build quality. Japanese cars I've looked at with AWD (subaru, etc) all seem cheap, and are around 3grand... I'd rather have a heavy german beast with a nice v6
Thanks for any answers, from what I can see, you guys are super helpful

B) Does anyone live in the NIagara Region of Ontario know any decent independent or REALLY good Audi dealer mechanics? Sry im in mississauga
C) Would it even be possible to get a warranty from Audi for a car this old, or would I be looking at 3rd party warranties only? It has to be audi certified for a warranty from audi and i dont think your going to find one in that year at a dealership
D) Do Audi dealerships generally have cars this old?
E) Does a price range around 5-6k for 170-200k km sound about right for decent shape? sounds right if i were you i would go for a 99.5+ you'll probably find one with less kms and the interior and exterior is updated.
F) I'm not a mechanic by any means, I'm a computer nerd. I don't mind turning a wrench, and my Old man has a full shop with hoist, and most tools you could think of, and enjoys working on cars.... but nothing too eletrical.. would it be safe to say he/we could change rotors and stuff like that or is it just insane once you get those wheels off? most things can be done with no special tools and there lots of Do It Yourself threads on this forum and other sites bentley manual is around $100 comes on dvd and has everything u need to know.
G) Is a 2.8 5pd REALLY hard to come by? Ive seen plenty but automatics are more common

Hazah! Thanks Chaos, exactly what I wanted to hear, and what my brains been telling me the entire time. The sauga is really not that far way, but I know that area generally runs more $$$ for anything. Thanks again for your reply.... I've been looking around for the right one now....

Re: Do I really want an Audi????
Yup. Take one out for a test drive (rain or shine (I actually perfer when it's snowing)) & I don't think you'll need anyone in helping you answering your question, woodsnake420.
BTW, what have you got under the hood of your Nova?

Re: Do I really want an Audi????
Yea what leo said. Its epic when its snowing... and SOOOOOOOOO much fun hahaha! the other day i was going over 100 km/h on the streetss and everyone was like moving at 20 km/h haha
I know thats kinda fast but it was on those 80-90 speed limit road so all good =)
But seriously, you see BMWs, toyotas, hondas, hyundais, ford, what ever names on the road except for Subaru's cars... they either get stuck, slip, or spin out.. the three S haha..

Re: Do I really want an Audi????
@ AWD-Leo: It's all original. 350, 4barrel, 4 spd stick, cabriolet (half-vinyl on the back), original SS with white vinyl interior. Great fun car to drive, just not the best mileage and not the greatest on snow so she's a summer driver only . My old man has a 67 SS, and he's working on a '62 chevy ii wagon right now .... its a nov-athon.
Thanks guys for all the answers, You've helped me answer exactly what I needed to know

Re: Do I really want an Audi????
woodsnake420,
Do you have a good sleep so far?
Owning an Audi will change it!!!
BTW - coming from Tempo or Escort => even a Corolla provides upscale experience.
Audis are recognised maintenance hogs (based on experience).
My Subaru Outback - 163k has taken less than $1000 for repairs so far (including TB).
If I could sell my A6, I'd go for Subaru.. or another Japanese...
Just my 2c
