Default Burning through engine oil

Hi,

We live in Australia.

My husband bought a 2001 A4 2.0L in March. It was a previous write off that got tail ended (apparently) but got repaired. Since then we've been using it but the oil sign keeps turning on after 250 km or thereabouts. From what I understand it should only be topped up every 1000km?

He has added an additive to stop the oil smoking (bear with me, I don't speak the right lingo here) but we've been told that the pistons may need changing, is that right? How else can we know for sure what is the problem and is it an expensive one?

What other problems could it be?

That's a lot of oil being lost in 250km. Do you see any blue exhaust smoke while driving or at idle when you push the accelerator quickly and hard? Also any signs of oil leaks from the valve cover or under the engine - you may need to remove the belly pan to check underneat and see if there's oil leaking from say the drain plug or a crack somewhere
