Here in the Republic of British Columbia, one can lose their car for speeding 20kmh over the speed limit! I was ticketed once for speeding (only 7kmh over the 80kmh limit!) and charged nearly $400 since fines are usually doubled in a construction zone. Naturally, we fought the ticket and it was dismissed!

PC B.C. is following Ontario in the stiffer fines but for B.C. the stiff fines start when you are going 40 kph over the posted speed limit. You don't lose your car permanently if you are caught speeding well over the limit it is actually impounded and given back. Things like street racing are different though because this is where they are trying to crack down because this is where people get killed. If you are out by yourself and you are caught speeding you will most likely get a ticket but if you are with one or more other cars speeding through traffic then you will be punished as you should be.
