Re: Audi - Gas Guzzler - Eco Killer?
1998 Audi A4 Vehicle Spec - Spec at AudiWorld says 16.4 US Gallons for the 1998 A4 2.8 Sedan
Gallon to Litre Conversion / Convert Gal to L / US Gallon to Litre / Convert US Gallons to Liters ( US Gal to L )
Using the calculator from that link I get 62.08l as your fuel tank capacity.

The calgary Audi says the capacity is 55 l , but I do not believe it. 62 is a bit too nmuch yet I would like to know what is the real thing.
I trust you.
Are you sure you are not mixing US gallons with brit gallons?
I appreciate this very much

Run the tank dry, pull over where ever you are put 5 known gallons of fuel in.
Zero your day odometer drive to the next service station and top off your tank.
Add the 5 gallons to the fuel pump reading and you will know the capacity of your tank.
If you run out of gas before you reached a service station, you are safe, because you are fare away from your computer and tools and OBDII scaner and can't write some dumb questions or do more damage to your car.

English Weights and Volume Measure Conversion - British Imperial - Metric - U.S. (from and to)
I've had 3 Audi's - 1998 2.8 A4 Sedan, 2005 3.0 A4 Sedan and 2008 2.0T A4 Avant. I don;t have the 1998 manual so can't confirm the data, but the Audiworld site matches the info I have in the manual for the later vehicles and the calcs I do myself when filling the 2005 and 2008.
If you need to know exactly then follow the suggestions above - general recommendation however is never to run the fuel tank to empty to help preserve the fuel pump. I'm comfortable to know within 3-5 litres and monitor my distance travelled and estimated km to empty accordingly.

A better option might be to drive slower then... ; that will improve your fuel consumption so the last 3 litres won't matter one way or other.

Re: Audi - Gas Guzzler - Eco Killer?
I have a similar problem with my 2001 Audi A4. That is, I appear to be taking in more gas than the tank can hold. My tank is rated at 15.6 gallons (per the manual), but more than once I took in .25 to .5 gallons more than capacity, with 5 to 20 miles to drive (per the on-board computer). I never top off.
One source of error may be a possible + or - Audi measurement error at the factory. (per Science Daily at sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/10/051023120710.htm.
Another source of error may be in the calibration of the pumps at the gas station. Where I live inspections need only take place every 2 years & a +or- error rate per pump is allowed, with a -2% average for the station. If Audi understated the tank capacity and the pump I used measured more gas than it delivered, that might account for the discrepancy. However, I am also wondering if the station pump was rigged.
