Audi A4 1998 or A6 1996
Hi, I am a newbie here and planning to buy an Audi. My choice is limited to a 1998 A4 2.8 Quattro or an A6 1996.
Any advice would be much appreciated as I do not know much about Audi cars.
Thank you very much

Re: Audi A4 1998 or A6 1996
Hi, I have a 98 a4 2.8 and I love the car.The most important thing is the timing belt, the engine cyl./valve train assy is interference. This means if the timing belt breaks it will cost about 3000-5000 to repair the heads. I replaced my tbelt/waterpump/idler/thermosthat for 750$ as soon as I bought the car because the dealer could not prove when it was done. I think audi recommends tbelt repacement @ 150k. I have replaced two wheel bearings, tree control rods and the abs module. But there was 150k on the car when I bought it so alot of the work I have done was routine maintenance,I paid 10k for the car two years ago.My advice is to buy the car with as low km's on it as you can.I don't know your budget, but there is a a4 in the autotrader with 58,000k on it for 14,000.If you pay the extra initally it will save in the long run.I have a friend that is a licensed mechanic that works for a vw/audi performance shop that will look at the car before buying it, he will check the entire car including any trouble/diagnostic codes the computer has registered in the past.Any more info that you need feel free to let me know, I will be glad to help out.
