I'm getting a strange whistling noise when turning right - let's say more than 5 degrees - but only when the fan is on ... it seems to be coming from the dashboard somewhere and when I hit the dashboard when it occurs, the pitch of the whistle does change ...


... the previous owner (a friend of mine) recommended that spraying the serpentine belt with WD40. This somewhat helps, but personally, I don't think that is the real issue ..

1. Does anyone else have this issue?
2. Any idea what it is?
3. How to eliminate it?

It is problably your fan motor for the intereior HVAC! The bearing is possibly on its way out and upon turning the bearing is rubbing the housing. Either disassemble the fanhousing - I believe it is behind the glovebox - and lube for now or replace the motor.

do you know how I get to it to lubricate? can i do that from inside or from the engine compartment?

Sounds like a weekend job ... so bottom line, i need to take apart the dash to get to the fan that we're talking about?

No, It's not a weekend job at all. It takes maybe 30 minutes if you don't know what you're doing. Remove the glovebox and the blower fan is right behind it, There arer 3-4 small screws holding it in and a harness plug thats all. Just so you know the Audi dealer will want $330.00 for a new blower, At least thats what they wanted for my 96'. So I just found someone parting out.
