Re: 2005 s4 4.2 questions
I'm so happy I moved on from that v8 engine, way too many issues...
If your set on it though make sure to get a compression/leakdown test done and check for the chain rattle at start up.
The cars maintaince history is also very important, oil changes every 5000km with full documentation.

Re: 2005 s4 4.2 questions
Regarding the timing chain issue.. im looking at buying an 05 S4, only has 124,000 kms on it. ive heard it start from cold but i wasnt listening for a timing chain, would it be really noticable or do you really have to listen for it? should i be worried buying this car?

I would avoid the "bastards" (2005.5). Go with 2006 or later.

Re: 2005 s4 4.2 questions
Joey - how many miles on your S4 with the timing chain issues? Were there any signs before it failed?
Axel - when you say avoid 2005.5 in favour of 2006, are you referring to the chain issue specifically? if so, what changed on the 2006, the guide material?
I dont know what the chain noise sounds like on these cars, i cant help there sorry. I had a VR6 years ago and had to change the guides on that. The noise was pretty obvious, a clear ticking noise at a very specific rev range, went away completely at other rpms
