Considering 2010 S4. What to look for?
I'm currently considering the 2010 S4 but I have heard that it has the infamous oil consumption problem. Can someone please chime in on this?
Also, if there is anything else I should be wary of? I.e. Timing belt vs chain. Defective mechatronic units etc....
I like the look of the car and I'm aiming to get one with the active sport diff. and *maybe* the 7sp Stronic automatic transmission but a 6sp manual would be more fun.

Hmmmm. Interesting that you say "nothing out of the ordinary". I'll check my 1.8T every 10k to see if it needs a quart of oil. To be honest, this kind of consumption does seem uncommon for most cars so I'll keep an eye out for it. Thanks for the input

i wouldn't say the S4 has a bad oil consumption issue. The A4 2.0T has some major issues.
being super charged or turbo, you are going to naturally burn more oil then an NA car. still i wouldn't say the S4 is bad. really a very small cost to keep the car running and have an amazing car.

Make sure that the water pump has been replaced. OEM was a plastic one that should have been replaced under a TSB. Also, the rear diffs in 2010 had a possible leak issue that should have also been corrected.
lastly - its a DSG not Stronis auto
and yes the manual is way more fun.

Thanks Turnus,
A few questions about your post.
Is the water pump and faulty rear diff seal issues recalls as in, I don't have to pay?
Also, what exactly does "DSG" stand for?

He is actually incorrect. It is an Stronic Automatic. It is not quite the same as a 'normal' DSG.

No they are not recalls, there are TSBs on both.
If your out of warranty and either fail you'd pay.
Under warranty a TSB (technical service bulletin) helps your service advisor or the tech working on your car diagnose the problem.
