Default RPMs drop

The problem car is a 2006 A3. The rpms drop suddenly & without warning, while under acceleration or while maintaining speed. This happens before the engine is up to temperature. Outside temperature does not seem to be relevant as this has happened during the summer & now in the fall, although the problem happens almost all the time now. When the rpm drops depressing the accelerator has no effect. The problem lasts for a few seconds & then the engine rpms return to normal. The engine has never stalled. There are no warning lights.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
Help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey

I don't know what exactly it could be but I would change the spark plugs, airfilter. Keep the tank above a quarter full and try 94 if your already not drivng on it. Does the engine feel like its going to stop ?

Thanks for the reply. The engine never feels like it is going to stall. When it happens the rpms just drop. the reflex action is to give it more gas but it does not change. Then after a few seconds it comes back & it feels just fine. I am using 91 octane, will try the 94. Air filter is clean, just checked it I bought it about a year ago, this same thing happened twice, about 2 months later then it was fine untill 3 weeks ago. I wonder if there is some sort of senser that is loose, or not working well when cold.I will have to check the records to see when it has had new spark plugs.

I thought about the sensors as well but from what I understand if one is not working right it usually comes up with some sort of an error on the dash.
