Default Remote Keys

Hi All;
Does anyone have an alternative to opening one's wallet down at the your friendly Audi dealer to get copie(s) of ones keys? eBay is selling uncut blank remotes but I'm not having much luck finding someone (that I trust) who would laser cut them in Vancouver. But then, do you still have to go to the dealer to program the remote, or is there a home-grown way that someone has figured out?
As well, how 'bout a non-remote traditional-style (valet?) key, any insights on where to pick-up those?

Thanxs...........Bill

Hi Bill,

As far as I know the only place to get a valet key is the Dealer. It cost 100$ and does not have to be cut. I don't believe the remote key has to be lazer cut either, just programmed. It is easy to program once you have the valet key. Search the tech bentlypublishers.com forum for instructions to program the key.I just searched bently for you, very easy, just use the valet key, turn the ignition on, not started, use the new key to lock the drivers door, within 5 seconds unlock the door with the remote, the car alarm horn should sound to verify the signal have been recieved. There are 4 memory locations for the key, you may have to hit the unlock 1-4 times in the above sequence to access another memory location if the initial procedure doesn't work.Also check craigslist.com,search under ontario,keyword is audi, and ther is a seller there for assorted audi/vw items.He sells the remote key for 40$,and he is a reputable seller,and a good guy, I know alot of people that have bought from him.AVOID ebay!they sell junk!If you have any questions feel free to contact me,I'm no pro,but I'll help out where I can.jodi3@rogers.
Regards

Hi Kent;
Thanxs for the quick response.
I went to Bentley and under 'Audi Remote Keyless Programing' I got 1500 responses! How did you narrow it down to the directions you found?
I have only ONE functioning factory remote key (hence the copies required) that has the factory laser channel cut in the key plug; it sounds like you figure that any subsequent blank key would not require the same channel cut into it to work in the ignition? I would think that it would not turn in the cylinder unless the same channel was cut? - No?
Also, I have a '02 A4, do I have to be specific about which blank remote I purchase or will any Audi Remote Key do?
Cheers........Bill

Hey there wedixon

You definitely need to match the key type to your car. I think there are two types from 2000 - 2005. I'm also pretty sure the key needs to be cut then programmed. You can do the programming on your own with instructions but the cutting has to come first. I'm looking for a source too.

Kent - I was checking Craigs now but I'm not sure who you're referring to. Have you got more info?

Sorry, 1st. day posting. May have already asked this elsewhere by mistake.
To recap: anyone know a reputable source for key blanks for 2000 A6 in Canada? I read someone found a source on Craigs List in Ontario, but I could not track it down.
Any help would be appreciated.

I've heard from various sources that the key blanks avail. on e-bay may be more trouble than they're worth. Me, I'm resigned to go to the dealer with my license and ownership, and pay via the nose for a new, guaranteed to work, laser cut, remote, switchblade key. The programing I'll try, as the dealer wants another 75 bucks for that. The key, as I recall, takes only a day to receive, and will be somewhere around three hundred bucks, cut.

Sheesh. I remember when that was rent. Now it's a key.

Note to anyone who cares: the APR chip upgrade I got for my 2.7 at H2Motorsports in Georgetown is the best upgrade for this car available. Great guys there, too. This is how the car should have come from the factory.

I'll get my key in the new year, unless I hear solid advice from someone on this list with a better idea.

Best of the New year to all.

It irks me that the stealerships have cornered the market for the keys. I'm CONVINCED there is an alternative (there just has to be one out there).

I can understand that you'll get a guaranteed key from them, but let's be frank. $300 is outright robbery. ROBBERY - programmed or not.

Incidentally, I'm still looking for a cutter so the thread is open.

I only have one key right now. I'm thinking of getting a valet from the stealership then going the Ebay route for a switchblade and sending that one out to a third party. That may minimize this swindle.

yeah, I don't blame you... $300 per key is just plain highway robbery.

Let us know when you find a proper cutter that does it for cheap.

I found one indy in the UK. I haven't used them yet though so I'm not sure about the service. I'll dig up what I've found so far and post it.
