I got a reply. I'm brining my car in on Friday this week for the windshield and a test drive w/ the service manager to 'evaluate' the noise. I will let you guys know what comes out of it.

Have same "rustling" noise esp going from 4th to 5th to 6th gear on highway acceleration. It started around 2500km. Dealer looking into it this week will let you know.

So dealer service dep't said that all A3's have the noise and it's normal until they hear otherwise from headquarters. I don't hear it in 'S' mode. Weird. If enough people complain, there may be a technical bulletin issued to correct it.

Do they mean all '09 A3 or all A3? I would have expected that Audi has worked out all the kinks in the '09. I can't believe how their engineers and QC did not notice this rattling noise. Could it be an early batch issue?

I hear the noise regardless of the gear, auto, S, or manual mode but it always rattles from 2200 - 2600 RPM.

I mean 2009 A3s. The noise I hear is not a rattling. It's more subtle more like leaves rustling. I don't hear it in S mode. Only D mode before and after gear shifts esp 3rd and up while accelerating. This could be different. Anyways, dealer service checked it out and basically said I have to live with it until I hear otherwise and the car is mechanically sound. A friend of mine thinks it's underutilization of turbo in city, slow speed driving can lead to turbo 'vanes' gumming up with carbon?? Only speculation and seems too soon to be carbon build up?

I went to the dealer and they said it was normal. I made them take me out in another 2009 A3 and the car made the same noise. The mechanic believes its because the 2009 has a different fuel pump then previous models. He pretty much told me its 'probably cheaper' or even better 'mismatched'...Basically, unless enough of us complain about it nothing is going to happen. Audi will only recall when they receive a substantial # of complaints. So for everyone on this thread please contact your dealer AND Audi Canada to complain regarding this noise. I don't know about you but a 'cheaper' or 'mismatched' fuel pump sounds like issues down the road.

Anybody have further info? Has the noise gotten better?

Personally mine hasn't but I find it is louder after I've just washed the car... How does this make sense???
