I have heard the tech in Winnipeg is quite good, but I figured a simple change with the computer would be basic knowledge among Audi technicians. Is that an unrealistic expectation?

Last weekend I enabled opening and closing the windows via remote for my friend's A4 and it took no time at all.
I just got a quote from a Canadian dealer to do this for $129+Tx. That's actually much cheaper than I expected. I never heard back from the local Audi dealer. Fortunately, I found someone local to let me use their VAG. Awesome nice of the guy . I'll have to being him some beer or something.

Top mods for the A3 are just the DRL (for the hosers) and the 3-second fob window roll up/down? Any other suggestions? Too bad the needle sweep isn't an option (it's not for a 2009 A3 is it?).

Haha, if you know what your doing you can enable DRL'S in less then a minute. Yea i wished i could have the needle sweep, not available on my 2009 a6 or my 03 a4. Also the remote goes up with key fob, also less then 2 minute job.

I'm pretty jazzed up about trying out the VAG-COM. I've never even considered doing such a thing. I'm generally pretty far from being a gear head (late 30's and this is my first car). Anyway, I work on software so this should be pretty fun.

I asked for one for Father's day. My wife told me she already got me something - drat! Oh well, only 180 or so shopping days until Christmas right?

Anyway, I hope the guys VAG will work on mine. I found him through the a VW Beetle forum. He uses it on his 2004 Beetle. Hopefully the connections are compatible with my 2009 A3.

Blurg - the guys Vag tool was not the right one. Oh well, the search continues - $350 new seems a bit steep for what I want to do but will consider it..

It was same with me, 350 for just a cord? But i wished i bought it sooner. So many things you can do with it, save alot of time and money. Also your friends cars etc! Alot of self diagnostics if you don't have warranty.

Yeah, I'm seriously considering it. My car is still under warranty so I shouldn't NEED on for a couple more years.

They look to be pretty hard to find on craigslist too. I did manage to score some OEM A3 racks ($150 shipping! whoop!) so maybe the craigslist gods will smile on me again

Sweet Jesus this is a pain in the ***.

I just took my car to ANOTHER shop that had a VAG-COM. I even gave them the instructions and none of the coding took - -i.e., he said he changed it and both the DRL and the windows with the fob just wouldn't work after changing the coding. WTF?

I just called Audi USA and yelled at them for a while (this is after I sent them a couple email asking for help which were annoyed). Supposedly they'll get back to me on Tuesday.

It irritates me that I get crap service from a company I buy a 40K car from whereas I get great customer service from a online store I buy $10 head phones from. Annoying.

Well the technician wants to give it another shot. I may have inadvertently given him the wrong instructions. I gave him the instructions from here:
OOOO-A3: VAG-COM Coding Reference
It does look a bit different from what is below but without first hand knowledge of vagcom it's difficult to tell.

Anyone? If below is the proper procedure, what is the correct way to bring with windows down with the key fob? I have a 2009A3. THANKS!

Go to Module 09 (Central Electrical), recode to ###XY, where:
X = DRL
0 – Halogen without DRL
1 – Halogen with DRL
2 – Bi-Xenon with DRL
3 – Bi-Xenon without DRL
4 – Bi-Xenon with DRL / tail light / license plate light

Y = Locale
1 – Rest of World / Nordic Countries / Denmark / Croatia / Baltic Countries with Bi-Xenon
2 – Nordic Countries / Denmark / Croatia / Baltic Countries without Bi-Xenon
3 – USA / Canada with Bi-Xenon
4 – Canada without Bi-Xenon
5 – Special Vehicles

Make Y- 4 and X what ever you want. Once you click apply, your lights should turn on when ignition is on.

In case you hadn't got this resolved already.

The codes above are for the A4 and will NOT work on an A3. The A3 uses CAN-BUS modules that typically require "long coding". The link following has a sheet that can be used to help determine the coding for each module. You will still need VCDS (formerly VAG-COM) to do the coding.

OOOO-A3: A3 CAN System Long Coding Worksheet & Instructions (for use with VAG-COM)

No it's still not resolved.

My DRL are enabled, I just need to change the country code so they turn on when the ignition starts. Annoying.

Someone in Victoria offered to do it for $150, this vag-com stuff seems to be a bit of a mess. I was hoping to try out the vag-com, get this to work, and then pick one up with the $150 saving. Oh well, no dice I guess. Thanks for the post.
